What is the Big 5 Series?

 

The South African Mint's Big 5 Series is a captivating collection of coins that celebrates Africa's iconic wildlife. Launched in 2019, the series features five of the continent's most renowned and majestic animals, commonly referred to as the "Big Five." 

These include the lion, elephant, rhinoceros, leopard, and buffalo.

Each coin in the series showcases detailed and beautifully crafted depictions of these magnificent creatures, highlighting their strength, grace, and significance in African wildlife conservation. The Big 5 Series not only serves as a stunning tribute to these iconic animals but also aims to raise awareness about the need for their protection and preservation.

Big 5 Series 2

 

Following the issuance sequence of the initial Big 5 series, Series II also adopted a staggered release approach. The series began with the elephant, followed by the lion, rhino, leopard, and buffalo, each introduced every six months.

Series II featured a subtle revision to the obverse design, while the reverse remained consistent with the previous series, displaying the two halves of the animal’s face. Unlike Series I, where the obverse of the elephant coins depicted both the face and part of the creature’s body facing left, Series II showcased a more dominant facial portrait without the rest of its body. The long, downward-pointing tusks from Series I were replaced with shorter, upward-pointing tusks, and the elephant now faced right instead of left.

Big 5 Series 3

With the introduction of Big 5 Series III, the collection continues its tradition of a staggered release, beginning once again with the elephant, followed by the lion, rhino, leopard, and buffalo at six-month intervals.

In this latest edition, the obverse design has undergone another transformation, further refining the depiction of each animal. While the reverse maintains the signature split-animal design from previous series, the obverse now presents an even more detailed and modern interpretation. The elephant, leading the collection, features a striking new perspective, emphasizing intricate textures and a more lifelike presence. This evolution in design enhances the depth and realism of the series while maintaining the distinct identity that has defined the Big 5 collection.
