The Great Kentucky Hoard

An incredible cache of over 700 Civil War-Era dated coins was discovered buried in a Kentucky cornfield by a metal-detecting enthusiast. While the majority of the coins discovered were $1 gold pieces, 18 $20 Double Eagle coins were also found, including the now finest-known 1863 Double Eagle.

Rare coin dealer Jeff Garrett, a leading expert in U.S. Coinage, was contacted to handle the newly discovered group of coins.

“While I’m always excited when someone calls asking for advice about rare coin discovery, the opportunity to handle the Great Kentucky Hoard is one of the highlights of my career,” he said.

An Unsolved Mystery

How and why the coins were buried remains a mystery. Was it a local resident, fearful of Union or Confederate soldiers plundering their life savings? Was it the payroll meant for a Union or Confederate regiment, given the number of $1 gold coins? Without a time machine, we’ll never know why these coins were buried in a cornfield, but do know this discovery could be the find of the century!

NGC Certifies and Pedigrees “Great Kentucky Hoard.” Numismatic Guarantee Company (NGC) “was honored to recently certify an incredible cache of rare Civil War-era coins found in the Bluegrass State. [It] includes a group of the finest known 1863 Double Eagles and hundreds of US Gold Dollars dated 1850 to 1862...”

“From first hearing about the hoard to seeing the raw coins and through to viewing the coins attributed, graded, and encapsulated, it has been an amazing experience,” said David Camire, NCS President, and NGC Finalizer.

Each coin from the Hoard is encapsulated with a special NGC Great Kentucky Hoard pedigree certification label, enhancing their display and presentation.

The Opportunity - Rare 1863 $20 Double Eagles

Finding Civil War-era gold coins is rare. Finding 1863 $20 Double Eagles is even more rare. Finding a near-full roll of 1863 $20 Double Eagles buried in the ground for the last 160 years is like winning the lottery!

But to then have them graded as some of the finest known, well, that only happens once every other lifetime! And that’s exactly the opportunity available today
