While many people collect the coin, not many know the history of the coin’s creation and the stories behind its beautiful designs. The Silver American Eagle has a rich history associated with it and you can read more on it below.

The History of the SIlver American Eagle

It all started in the 1970s when the United States government wanted to start selling off silver that was being held in the Defense National Stockpile. Much of Congress believed that selling off the stockpiled silver would be beneficial, but there was an ardent opposition to selling any of the silver in fear that there wouldn’t be enough to use in case an emergency arose or the government needed a bailout strategy. Congress continued to disagree about the stockpile until 1982 when the House Armed Services Committee authorized the selling of silver to balance out the federal budget during the Reagan administration. Once the authorization was official, Congress finally came to an agreement to sell 75% of the silver that was being held over a three-year period, which equates to about 105.1 million troy ounces of silver. This piece of legislation was eventually overturned citing that selling that quantity of silver would effectively ruin the silver market. The next piece of major legislation involving the coin came just two years later in the mid-1980s. The Silver American Eagle was first introduced to the United States on November 24, 1986, due to the Liberty Coin Act of 1985. From the time it was first minted until now, it was been minted in three different locations, the Philadelphia Mint, San Francisco Mint, and the West Point Mint. From 1986 to 1992 the proof Silver American Eagles were minted exclusively in San Francisco. Then from 1993 to 2000 proof coins were minted in Philadelphia and from 2001 to 2008 the Silver American Eagles were minted in West Point. The coin was originally minted in only the 1 Troy-ounce size, so if you were ever looking for smaller denominations for those years, you’re out of luck. Another thing to note about the Silver American Eagle is that it is available in proof and bullion conditions, except for 2009 when no proof version was minted.

The Design of the Silver American Eagle

Interestingly enough, the Gold American Eagle and Silver American Eagle have different designs, so it’s not only their metal content that sets them apart. The obverse of the coin displays the beautiful Walking Liberty design by Adolph A. Weinman, a German-born, American sculptor, and architect. The same design was used for the Walking Liberty Half Dollar which was circulated from 1916 to 1947. The design has also been a long time favorite among coin investors and collectors for generations. It was natural for the design to be selected for the new coin. The reverse of the coin features John Mercanti’s, notable American sculptor, a portrait of a majestic bald eagle with a shield covering the bird’s breast. The reverse of the coin also features the face value, weight, United States of America, and 13 stars.
