History of the coin:
The Gold American Buffalo is perhaps one of the most celebrated pieces in modern American coinage. From its impressive gold contents to its historical significance, the Gold American Buffalo is an excellent addition to investment portfolios of all sizes and scales.

The Gold American Buffalo series began in 2006, growing out of the U.S. market's demand for a purer gold coin than had previously been issued. This coin would, in turn, it was hoped, compete with Canada's Gold Maple Leaf and offer Americans the opportunity to add an exceedingly pure gold coin of domestic origins to their asset holdings. As a result, the coin was conceived and cast in .9999 fine gold, serving as the first 24-karat gold coin struck for and issued to the public by the U.S. Mint. While the 2018 Gold American Buffalo Proof 70 coins do carry denominations of $50, their real value stems from the pieces' highly pure gold contents.

The 2018 Gold American Buffalo PF70 coin is an ode to early 20th century U.S. coinage, featuring a replica of James Earle Fraser's 1913 Type I Buffalo nickel design. The piece's obverse depicts a reproduction of Fraser's right-facing profile portrait of an unnamed male Native American figure donning two feathers in his hair. The word "LIBERTY" is inscribed in the top right "corner" of the coin, and the piece's year of mintage is struck in the bottom left. A "W" mintmark, indicating production at the West Point Mint, appears just above the man's right shoulder, and an "F" standing for the original designer's last name - Fraser - struck just below the mintage year.

The coin's reverse is also a replica of Fraser's 1913 Buffalo nickel design. It features a left-facing bison, the famed and beloved symbol of America, standing atop a grassy patch of land. The words, "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" line the top edge of the coin while the country's motto, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" is inscribed in three single-word lines below. "IN GOD WE TRUST" appears in the bottom left area of the coin, along with the piece's $50 face value and "1OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD" contents in the bottom center.
